The Spirit of the River of Quito is a photographic project that includes academic research published by UNAM, a collection of 47 photographic pieces, a photobook, and an augmented reality map that revives the original, now lost and forgotten, water pathways that once defined the ancestral city of Quito.

Photographic work created by Monica Aguilar, ongoing since 2019 in Quito, Ecuador. Digital photographs printed on watercolor photographic paper, hand-illuminated. Total collection: 47 original pieces.

  • Augmented Reality Map
    Developed using historical maps of the city, cross-referenced with Google Earth (2020) and archival heritage photographs. Painted by hand in watercolor and animated to depict the flow of pure water from the La Chorrera waterfall to the Machángara River via the Ullaguangayacu ravine.
  • Photobook
    Featuring the artistic content of the project and academic research published by the Water Network of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). To join the waitlist for purchasing the book, please contact us directly.
  • Works for Sale
