ON DISPLAY
The exhibition “Symbols of the River” is open in the “La Estación” room of the Interactive Science Museum in Quito, as part of the Milestones of the Neighborhood: an open space for activities carried out by the communities near the museum.
In the exhibition, you will be able to appreciate “the symbols of the river” created by the girls and boys participating in the second edition of the Samayuio Children’s Art Workshop that took place in August 2024 at Casa Machankara, on the banks of the city’s emblematic river.
Each “symbol” represents the respectful bond that each participant had when coming into contact with the first and historic source of water in Quito: the Quitu-Cara Waterfall in the Pichincha moor. This spring is protected by the community of San Francisco de Cruz Loma and is the gift (water) that our “Taita Rucu” (old father) gives us so that we can live and inhabit its territories.
During the workshop we had a bonding visit to the waterfall, where they were able to create photographic works that later, thanks to the facilitator’s methodology, were revealed in the works that we show below. The waterfall and the river form a single tributary that brings life to the community.
This exhibition is an offering to the city’s emblematic river, the Machangara. Its installation represents an altar so that we can continue to unite around its waters and recover that loving and respectful connection with natural entities.
Visit the exhibition, which is open from Wednesday to Sunday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. until April 2025.
