Samayuio Children’s Art Workshop

Join the third edition of this workshop designed to connect children aged 7 to 11 with the historic rivers and water sources of their communities.

In this workshop, each participant will develop their creativity, emotional awareness, and appreciation for pure spring water—the greatest treasure of humanity—from their own perspective and introspection.

Families are an integral part of this experience, so moms, dads, grandparents, aunts, and uncles: you are all welcome!

The workshop consists of three integral components designed to foster creativity, emotional connection, and a deeper appreciation for water and rivers:

Deep Photography and Botany

Each participant develops their own story of conservation and love for rivers and water, told through the unique lens of their photographic creations. Children unveil their personal river symbol on a natural leaf, which serves as a memory anchor for the feelings, thoughts, and emotions experienced during direct contact with a water source. This component includes a profound bonding visit rooted in Andean cosmology and values of respect, care, and conservation. It is based on the Fotofilia methodology developed by facilitator Mónica Aguilar.

Sound

Under the guidance of music therapist Elena Montúfar, participants dive into their conservation stories to compose a musical piece. This music reinforces their emotions, thoughts, and commitment to respecting and valuing pure spring water.

The River Loom

Led by Camola Valarezo, this component involves weaving a unique piece that embodies the conservation stories participants have created in image and sound. Using recycled materials, children learn how to transform what might otherwise be considered “trash” into meaningful art, preventing it from polluting their community’s rivers.

At the end of each annual cycle, the workshop culminates in a collective exhibition showcasing participants’ works. This exhibition expands the message of love and conservation for rivers, restoring relationships with these natural treasures and renewing the community’s collective imagination.

“New plants”

“I liked the plant that closed its leaves when touched, the stories, and using recycled materials. I will collect trash and put it in its place. Organic waste will go to large gardens to grow new plants and trees.”
